Shabana Walayat

Director & Head of Family Law

Shabana is a co-founder of Shortlands and a highly experienced family lawyer with over 30 years of expertise in all areas of family law. She advises clients in the UK and internationally, on complex financial and children matters.

Her practice includes high-net-worth financial disputes, child arrangements, domestic abuse, relocation cases, fact-finding hearings, and the preparation of family law agreements. Shabana is recognised for her pragmatic and client-focused approach, always seeking to resolve disputes constructively while providing robust representation where court proceedings are necessary. She has lectured on family law, contributed to legal publications and television material, and regularly advises fellow professionals on complex family law issues.

Shabana holds an LLB (2.1) and was admitted to the Roll of Solicitors in 1994. She is an accredited Resolution Lawyer and Honorary Legal Adviser at the High Court.

Experience

  • Acted for a wife in a High Court high-net-worth financial remedy case with Middle East connections, involving multiple jurisdictions and offshore assets. The matter required extensive investigation into complex trusts and undisclosed assets across the UK, Libya and the UAE, securing a settlement that met the client's long-term financial needs.
  • Represented high-net-worth husbands in complex cross-border financial proceedings involving assets and income across jurisdictions including Egypt, the UAE, France, Switzerland, Pakistan, India and Russia. Advised on the protection and ring-fencing of inherited, pre-marital and post-separation assets to achieve fair and commercially sound outcomes.
  • Successfully acted for clients following overseas divorces where financial settlements were inadequate. Secured appropriate financial provision through the English Family Court, ensuring clients received fair outcomes in relation to income, capital and pension claims.
  • Represented both mothers and fathers in complex cases involving serious allegations of abuse, securing outcomes that safeguarded children's welfare and future care arrangements.
